Gold Rush Black and White Workshop on Saturday, April 25th

Inspired by the online program on B/W photography on March 14th, Gold Rush invites you to join an in-person workshop on B/W Photography on Saturday, April 25th.  As you know, we’ll start with programs in the morning with two excellent presenters (to give you a variety of approaches) followed by an afternoon photo shoot on the subject.  There’s a charge of $15 for guest passes to check us out, no charge for Gold Rush members, and we’ll be renewing your Gold Rush and PSA memberships at the workshop.  We’ll be meeting at our usual location at the Oakmont of East Sacramento at 5301 F St.  You can register now at https://tinyurl.com/BWWagnerGarrett.

Please note that you can still submit up to 8 images from the last workshop on Playing with Light (or images with a similar theme) to philip@philipvenablephotography.com by April 17th (one week before the workshop) for inclusion in the slideshow, and up to 2 B/W images for a critique by our current presenters by April 17th as well.  Please visit our beautiful new website (psagoldrush.org) for more photo entry information.

9:30 Introductory meeting and slideshow of images from Playing with Light workshop

10:00-11:30 B/W programs, with cookie/coffee break in between presenters

11:30-12:00 Critique of B/W images by presenters

12:00 No-host lunch at Panda Express (5801 Folsom) or wherever/whatever you choose

1:30-4:00 B/W shoot at Tower Bridge/Old Sacramento; meet at the front of the parking garage off Capitol

GARY WAGNER:  BIO & PROGRAM

Gary Wagner discovered his passion for photography early in his life, and studied at the Brooks Institute of Photography.  Now based in Southern Oregon, he has spent over four decades photographing landscapes throughout the US and abroad.  Working exclusively in black and white, Wagner emphasizes the essential shapes, lines and tonal qualities of landscapes, reflecting how he experiences a scene.  His work expresses a deep respect for the natural beauty and order of the earth.  Through his photography, Gary continues to explore the expressive possibilities of black and white imagery and share his interpretation of the natural world.

Seeing in Black and White explores the art of black and white landscape photography, focusing on inspiration, vision, and the creative process.  Gary will discuss how he approaches transforming color scenes into compelling B&W images, and the journey from initial vision to the final print.  Through a selection of photographs, he’ll share insights into how light, shape, line and tone come together to create expressive black and white landscapes.

LAURIE GALLANT:  BIO & PROGRAM

Laurie lived most of her life in San Francisco where she had a travel portrait/event/headshot job shooting theater and portrait clients as well as portraits of Chevron’s mariners.  She moved to Rocklin and is currently an instructor for the Sacramento Photography Group, with bi-weekly field trips covering a variety of subjects.

She will give a talk about the benefits of adding B&W photography to your portfolio of images, and will have some challenges for the photographers when we go shooting.
