Upcoming Gold Rush In-Person Workshop
We have fall, winter, and spring all-day workshops, and no summer workshops.
Thinking about a trip and want some tips about Travel Photography, or just enjoy Street Photography and can use some travel photography tips? Laurie Friedman, the Gold Rush President, will be presenting a program on Travel Photography, including everything she has learned during her years of travel, ranging from location and photography advice to packing tips. Adding icing to the cake, Susan Bovey, the Gold Rush VP, will talk about online and phone apps for travel.
We’ll be meeting as usual at the Oakmont of East Sacramento at 5301 F St.
The schedule is:
8:30 AM for registration (with coffee and cookies)
9-10:45 AM or so for the program
10:45 AM drive downtown for a conveniently-timed Ethnic Parade for our photo shoot
The program is free for Gold Rush members, but you can come as a guest for $15 to check us out or join Gold Rush for $25 for the year. This will be a great opportunity to join Gold Rush if you didn’t pay during our membership drive, and we’ll have our computers ready with updated info about your GR and PSA information.

Audience Participation Notes: You can send up to 8 images from the last workshop on B/W photography, or actually any B/W photos you want to share, to philip@philipvenablephotography.com by 10/17 for inclusion in the slide show. As an added bonus you can send two of your travel images to Philip by 10/17 to be critiqued by the presenters at the end of the program (time allowing).

Travel Photography
After visiting over 100 countries, both to see the sights and do photography, Laurie will share her years of travel experience: She’s visited all seven continents and can recommend places and best times of the year to travel, has a list of affordable travel companies as well as a packing list to share, can compare solo vs. tour travel, and has photography advice and tips as well. Please bring your questions in case something is missed!
Travel Planning Can Be Fun
Susan believes the research and planning for a trip is as much fun as being there. She has a handout with online and phone apps to help plan, navigate, and find unique areas of photographic interest both before and on your trips.
Biographies
Laurie Friedman
The story started with a vacation to visit ancient ruins in Mexico, where Laurie fell in love with both photography and travel. She is an award-winning photographer who has visited over 100 countries (so far!), enjoying taking photos of landscapes, people, and artistic, graphic details. Laurie is the President of Gold Rush, participates in local camera clubs, was the Travel Director of the Sierra Camera Club, and is active in the Photographic Society of America (PSA) as the Director of the Speakers Bureau as well as being the Northern California Membership Director.
Susan Bovey
Susan has been a photographer for about fifty years, both professionally and for personal enjoyment. She has been the President of the Woodland Camera Forum for many years and is active in many
local clubs. Exhibiting in numerous competitions and galleries, Susan is also a regular judge for camera club competitions in Northern California.

Gold Rush Chapter meets in-person for photography workshops three times a year. The meetings are held at the Oakmont of East Sacramento retirement community. Join us on the third floor in the ballroom.
Once you enter the building, walk passed the desk and take a right. Go the end of the hall to take another right. The elevator is on the right at the end of the short hall. Take the elevator to the third floor. Exit the elevator and take a left. Take the first left towards the double doors at the end of the hall to the ballroom through the double doors.
Gold Rush Black and White Workshop on Saturday, April 25th
Inspired by the online program on B/W photography on March 14th, Gold Rush invites you to join an in-person workshop on B/W Photography on Saturday, April 25th. As you know, we’ll start with programs in the morning with two excellent presenters (to give you a variety of approaches) followed by an afternoon photo shoot on the subject. There’s a charge of $15 for guest passes to check us out, no charge for Gold Rush members, and we’ll be renewing your Gold Rush and PSA memberships at the workshop. GARY WAGNER: BIO & PROGRAM
Gary Wagner discovered his passion for photography early in his life, and studied at the Brooks Institute of Photography. Now based in Southern Oregon, he has spent over four decades photographing landscapes throughout the US and abroad. Working exclusively in black and white, Wagner emphasizes the essential shapes, lines and tonal qualities of landscapes, reflecting how he experiences a scene. His work expresses a deep respect for the natural beauty and order of the earth. Through his photography, Gary continues to explore the expressive possibilities of black and white imagery and share his interpretation of the natural world.
Seeing in Black and White explores the art of black and white landscape photography, focusing on inspiration, vision, and the creative process. Gary will discuss how he approaches transforming color scenes into compelling B&W images, and the journey from initial vision to the final print. Through a selection of photographs, he’ll share insights into how light, shape, line and tone come together to create expressive black and white landscapes.
LAURIE GALLANT: BIO & PROGRAM
Laurie lived most of her life in San Francisco where she had a travel portrait/event/headshot job shooting theater and portrait clients as well as portraits of Chevron’s mariners. She moved to Rocklin and is currently an instructor for the Sacramento Photography Group, with bi-weekly field trips covering a variety of subjects.
She will give a talk about the benefits of adding B&W photography to your portfolio of images, and will have some challenges for the photographers when we go shooting.

Critique
Adding more options for member participation, when possible after the presentation there will be an opportunity for the presenters to (gently) critique up to two of your images related to the topic.
